The Minimbah Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 125 MW/500 MWh grid-scale battery project that will play a vital role in New South Wales' transition to clean, reliable energy.

Connecting to the existing 132 kV Tomago–Taree transmission line operated by Transgrid, the Minimbah BESS will store and dispatch electricity when and where it is needed most – providing fast-response grid support, strengthening system reliability, and helping to power the large industrial loads of the Tomago region. The project will also accelerate the integration of renewable energy across NSW's electricity network.

CleanGen acknowledges the Worimi people as the Traditional Custodians of this Country. We are committed to engaging with the Worimi community with respect and integrity and working together throughout development, construction and operation to ensure this project contributes meaningfully and positively to the region and its people.

Community Impact

CleanGen is committed to ensuring the Minimbah BESS delivers meaningful and lasting benefits for the communities that host it. The project will create real employment and skills pathways with a strong commitment to local workforce participation, including dedicated opportunities for women, young people, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while prioritising regional suppliers to keep economic activity flowing locally. A long-term Community Benefit Fund will invest in education, youth development, women's safety, Indigenous programs and rural resilience, developed in consultation with local councils and community organisations to ensure benefits are directed where they are needed most and deliver lasting value for the region.

Benefits and Outcomes

The Minimbah BESS forms part of critical infrastructure supporting NSW's transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system. Connected to the existing Tomago–Taree Transgrid line, the project will improve grid reliability and support greater renewable generation across the state. Through a long-term Community Benefit Fund, CleanGen will deliver sustained investment in local education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partnerships, youth development and community wellbeing, giving back to the region that hosts the project across its full operating life.

Testimonial

"Laura and I have always believed in a sustainable way of life, and when the opportunity came to host the Minimbah BESS, it was an easy decision. It's a smart use of the land, it aligns with our values, and the best part is we don't have to lift a finger. It sets our family up for the next 20-plus years. For our kids, that means a lot."
