Overview

The Mareeba Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 230 MW project proposed by CleanGen in Mareeba, Far North Queensland. Pairing large-scale solar generation with battery storage, the project is designed to meet the region's growing energy demands by storing and dispatching clean power precisely when and where it is needed most.

Far North Queensland is one of the state's fastest growing regions, and its energy network must keep pace. The Mareeba Solar and BESS will play an important role in strengthening grid reliability across the region, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and delivering a more stable, resilient energy supply for the communities of the Tablelands and beyond.

CleanGen pays its respects to the Muliridji people, the Traditional Custodians of the Country on which this project stands, and is committed to building a respectful and lasting partnership with their community throughout the life of the project.

Community Impact

Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands have a strong and proud sense of community, shaped by generations of farming, agriculture and a deep connection to the land. The Mareeba Solar and BESS project is designed to reflect and reinforce those values by creating real and lasting benefits for the people of Far North Queensland. CleanGen will prioritise local employment and regional suppliers, ensuring the economic activity generated by the project flows directly into the Mareeba community. Working in close partnership with local councils, community organisations and the Muliridji people, CleanGen will develop a community benefit program that supports education, youth development, women's initiatives and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs — shaped by the community, for the community, and delivered for the full life of the project.

Benefits and Outcomes

The Mareeba Solar and BESS project will make a significant contribution to Far North Queensland's energy future, delivering clean, reliable power to a region where demand continues to grow. By pairing solar generation with battery storage, the project will strengthen grid stability across the Tablelands and reduce the region's reliance on fossil fuels, supporting Queensland's broader transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.

Beyond its energy impact, the project will deliver enduring economic benefits to the Mareeba community. Local procurement, ongoing employment and a long-term community benefit fund will ensure that value continues to flow into the region well beyond construction. CleanGen is committed to creating meaningful pathways for local people — including scholarships, mentorships and development opportunities for young people, women and the Muliridji community — ensuring the opportunities that come with the clean energy transition are felt across all corners of the Tablelands for generations to come.
