Overview

Powering the Hunter's clean energy future

A landmark project for the Hunter region, the Llama Energy Hub combines a 1,500MW battery energy storage system with a 1,500MW wind farm — one of Australia's most significant clean energy developments.

The Hub's battery storage will store and dispatch electricity to strengthen grid reliability, support the integration of renewable energy and help replace retiring coal generation across the Hunter. By utilising existing transmission infrastructure, Llama BESS will accelerate the region's transition to a modern, clean energy system while delivering lasting benefits for local communities.

The wind farm will be developed at a later stage, completing the Hub's vision as a fully integrated clean energy facility for the region.

CleanGen acknowledges that this project is being developed on the traditional lands of the Wonnarua people and pays respect to their enduring connection to Country.

Community Impact

The Llama Energy Hub is about more than clean energy – it's about a stronger Upper Hunter. CleanGen is committed to honouring Wonnarua Country through meaningful First Nations partnerships, while also driving local employment, regional procurement, and workforce transition support for communities moving beyond coal. Alongside local councils and community members, we're investing in education, women's safety, and youth development that reflect the priorities of this region.

Benefits and Outcomes

The Upper Hunter has powered Australia for generations. The Llama Energy Hub is here to make sure it keeps doing exactly that – just with cleaner energy and stronger communities.

We're committed to real transition pathways for coal workers and families, local job creation, and an independently managed Community Benefit Sharing Fund investing in education, scholarships, women's mentorship and First Nations initiatives – with every outcome measured and reported. Because this region's contribution deserves to be recognised, rewarded and supported into the future.

Testimonial

"The land has always provided for us if you treat it right. This partnership is about making sure it keeps providing – for my kids, my grandkids, and the community around us. I'm proud to be part of something that looks after this region's future."
