Solar and battery storage
Overview
The Burdekin Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a large-scale renewable energy project located in the Burdekin Shire, Queensland. The project comprises a 140 MW solar farm paired with a 500 MW / 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system — one of the largest battery storage projects in Australia — designed to deliver reliable clean energy and significantly strengthen the regional electricity network across North Queensland.
Strategically located in the Burdekin region, the project benefits from exceptional solar resources and proximity to key grid infrastructure, making it ideally positioned to support Queensland's growing renewable energy capacity and the state's transition away from fossil fuels.
CleanGen secured the project site and successfully obtained Development Approval from Burdekin Shire Council, Queensland State Planning and the Australian Government under the EPBC Act in 2018 — a significant milestone that reflects the project's strong environmental and planning foundations and the rigour with which it was developed from the ground up. The project continues to be developed under a joint venture between ACE Power and Osaka Gas.
CleanGen acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the Country on which this project stands and pays its respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, recognising their enduring connection to this land.
